Artificial intelligence-based law firm wins in court
Summary
Garfield AI, the first artificial intelligence-based law firm to receive regulatory approval in the UK, has won its first court trial. The case involved Tamires Camal Taquidir, a freelancer who used Garfield AI to pursue unpaid fees owed to her by a hospitality business. The AI legal assistant handled pre-action correspondence, court proceedings, document production, witness statements, and trial bundles. During the three-hour trial at Wandsworth County Court, the defendant instructed solicitors and brought a counterclaim, which the claimant disputed with Garfield AI's support. The court found in favor of the claimant, awarding £7,000 and dismissing the counterclaim. The claimant paid approximately £400 in Garfield AI fees to recover the debt. Daniel Long, CTO and co-founder of Garfield AI, emphasized that the technology is about empowering people and businesses to enforce their rights rather than replacing lawyers. Mark Lewis, a lawyer at Stephenson Harwood, noted that while the amount recovered was small, the case validates the use of AI in legal systems and highlights how legal costs can be a barrier to justice in small claims.
