NLPatent rebrands as Clerq, launches agentic patent research workflows
Summary
NLPatent, a Toronto-based patent research startup, has rebranded as Clerq and launched its first agentic workflows designed to streamline patent research. These workflows enable a full patentability analysis in approximately 10 minutes, a task that traditionally takes days or weeks. Two workflows are available: a rapid triage assessment for screening invention disclosures and a comprehensive patentability report with cited references. Clerq emphasizes that attorneys review the reasoning before finalizing reports. The rebranding reflects the company's focus on law clerk-like efficiency under attorney oversight. The firm, which has been using large language models since before ChatGPT, also announced integrations with RPX Corp. and Park IP to enhance its research capabilities. Michael Chernoff, a former USPTO examiner and IP executive, has joined as director of IP strategy. Clerq operates in a private cloud, ensuring customer data isn't used for training. Founded in 2021 by Stephanie Curcio and James Stonehill, the company raised $3 million in funding to develop its agentic workflows.
