Beyond the Headlines: A Look at Q2 Venture Activity

National Law Review
Q2 venture funding hit $212.9B, but deal count fell to a decade low, with mega‑rounds concentrating capital in AI firms.

Summary

In Q2, venture capital funding totaled $212.9 billion, down 26% quarter‑over‑quarter but still the second‑highest quarter on record. Deal count dropped to 7,086, a decline of 11% QoQ and the lowest level in over a decade, while the median deal size rose 5% to $4.2 million. M&A and IPO exits were down 10% and 6% respectively. Mega rounds accounted for 81% of all funding, with a single company representing 40% of the total. AI‑related sectors drove much of the activity: industrial humanoid robot developers had 20 deals worth $2.7 billion, robot foundation model developers 15 deals worth $9.2 billion, large language model developers 12 deals worth $76.2 billion, coding AI agents 13 deals worth $67.3 billion, and legal AI agents 13 deals worth $66.2 billion. Geographically, North America supplied 68% of global funding, though the US saw a 31% decline in deal momentum QoQ; the United Kingdom, India, Japan, and China rounded out the top five countries for deal count. The overall picture is a concentrated market where large amounts of capital flow to a small group of AI‑focused mega‑rounds, leaving the broader venture landscape with weak deal activity and limited exit opportunities.
