EDRM has opened public comment on EDRM 2.0, a major update to the electronic discovery reference model reflecting modern practices and AI integration.

Summary

The Electronic Discovery Reference Model (EDRM) has launched a public comment period for EDRM 2.0, marking the first substantive update since incorporating the Information Governance Reference Model (IGRM). Developed by approximately 150 global practitioners, the updated model modernizes the foundational framework established in 2005 to address the evolving landscape of technology, data volumes, and regulatory expectations. Key updates include grounding the discovery lifecycle in information governance principles, grouping data acquisition activities into a unified framework, recognizing disposition as a core phase, and emphasizing continuous analysis across all discovery stages to reflect the growing role of AI and analytics. The project was led by co-project trustees Shannon Lex Bales, Rian Kennedy, Stephanie Clerkin, and Brett Burney, with input from over 100 diverse community members. Public comments are accepted through July 30, 2026, and will be reviewed by project trustees to determine if further revisions are warranted before final publication.
