Florida Becomes First US State Bar to Offer Free Legal AI to Every Member

The Florida Bar has made history by becoming the first state bar association in the United States to provide its members with free access to a legal AI platform. Through a partnership with the legal technology company Clio, launched during the Bar's annual convention in Orlando, eligible members will receive four months of unlimited access to Clio Work, followed by limited access, alongside comprehensive training and ethical guidance.

This initiative addresses growing concerns regarding the use of generic AI tools in the legal profession, which can pose risks to client confidentiality and lead to "hallucinations" or inaccurate legal citations. Unlike generic models, Clio's platform utilizes a closed database of over one billion primary legal documents to ensure accuracy and grounding in law. This move follows Florida's leadership in the field, as the state was the first to issue formal ethical guidance on generative AI through Ethics Opinion 24-1.
