AI shifts from experimental tool to core legal strategy, Thomson Reuters Korea head tells Seoul forum
Summary
Junwon Kim, representative director of Thomson Reuters Korea, said in his opening speech at the Korea Legal Tech Forum 2026 on 9 June that artificial intelligence has moved beyond pilot projects and become central to law firms and in-house legal teams. Speaking to around 250 in-house counsel, private practice lawyers and academics at Conrad Seoul, he said legal teams now use AI for case law and statute review, contract analysis, document drafting, legal research and compliance checks, not just search and translation. Kim identified three main drivers of this shift: automating repetitive tasks, improving access to information and workflow speed, and changing how legal services are delivered. He also said organizations using AI effectively are adopting data-driven operating models that support risk prediction and proactive responses rather than reactive decision-making. The event included participation from sponsors and organizations including LawForm, BoostDraft, Kim & Chang, Yoon & Yang, DLG Law Corporation, LIN, Channel Talk and WizBase.
