Edinburgh-based Wordsmith AI secures $70m funding to expand its AI platform, targeting 300 global employees and US market growth.

Summary

Wordsmith AI, an Edinburgh-based legal technology startup, has raised $70 million (£52m) to accelerate its scale-up. The funding, led by Highland Europe and Index Ventures, will support expanding its AI platform to serve over 500 companies, including major clients like Sage, Starling, BT, and Canva. The company aims to grow its workforce to 300 globally by year-end and intensify its presence in the US market. Wordsmith’s platform automates legal workflows through four actions: Receive, Route, Resolve, and Record, handling routine tasks while escalating complex cases to lawyers. CEO Ross McNairn emphasized that Wordsmith acts as a 'front door' for legal work, integrating with tools like Slack and Salesforce. Investor Jean Tardy-Joubert highlighted the company’s vertical approach, which involves all employees in legal processes. Founded by McNairn, Volodymyr Giginiak, and Robbie Falkenthal, Wordsmith has demonstrated rapid growth, with McNairn previously scaling Perk to $200m in annual revenue.
