Elite law firm to splash £370m on building own AI tool
Summary
Kirkland & Ellis, the world's largest law firm by revenue, is investing £370m to build its own custom AI platform, challenging competitors who rely on third-party tools like Harvey and Legora. The firm plans to use the technology to deploy the collective intelligence of its lawyers across the firm. The investment will be funded by the firm's profits and will involve hiring external tech professionals alongside its own data scientists and engineers. The platform will be designed using information from 250 lawyers, including 100 partners, and will be used for lawyers' mandates in full. Kirkland & Ellis is not an outlier, as other law firms like Addleshaw Goddard, Clifford Chance, and Mishcon de Reya have also developed their own AI systems. However, the rapid adoption of AI in the legal industry has led to issues, such as Pinsent Masons facing backlash after sending court letters containing AI hallucinations.
