MLConnect wins 2023 Law Tech Challenge
Summary
The 2023 UTS Allens Neota Law Tech Challenge for Social Justice was won by MLConnect, an app designed to streamline the intake process for Marrickville Legal Centre. The app aims to improve access to justice for thousands of residents in Sydney's inner west. The competition, which brings together law students, not-for-profit clients, a software company, and a law firm, saw 20 students divided into four teams, each assigned to a different client. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) received a Special Mention for its interactive educational tool on international humanitarian law, while the Sydney Story Factory won a Special Mention for its app, 'Protect Your Passion,' which teaches young people about their legal rights as authors. Team PIAC also received a Special Mention for 'Sparking Change that will Improve Lives' for an app that helps people with disabilities log instances of discrimination at Australian airports. The event was judged by Peter Campbell from Allens, Dominique Simsion from Neota, and Professor Anita Stuhmcke from UTS Law. The competition is run as part of the Brennan Justice and Leadership Program and is considered a valuable opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience at the intersection of law and technology.
