Beyond LPO: Building the Modern Legal Center of Excellence
Summary
The article argues that the legal industry has evolved from traditional Legal Process Outsourcing (LPO) into a strategic 'Legal Ops 2.0' model. This shift is driven by the need for agility and technology, characterized by end-to-end process redesign, AI-enabled workflow orchestration, and data-driven performance measurement. The global LPO market is projected to grow significantly, and providers are now acting as strategic partners rather than task executors. A Strategic Legal Center of Excellence (CoE) is proposed as the solution, anchoring high-value functions such as contract lifecycle management, IP research, and analytics. The article highlights that Indian legal teams, leveraging their common law background and dual qualifications, are increasingly capable of managing complex, multi-jurisdictional compliance, including GDPR and data privacy regulations. Ultimately, the author recommends moving beyond transactional outsourcing to build integrated, tech-enabled CoEs that deliver faster decisions and sustained enterprise value.
