The three surprising careers bringing in six-figure paychecks

The Independent
Court stenographers, dental hygienists, and information security analysts are three under-the-radar jobs that offer salaries exceeding $100,000.

Summary

Career switching is becoming a major trend in the American workforce, with many workers seeking to change fields to secure better financial futures. The Independent consulted career advisors to identify three roles that pay significantly more than the average person might expect. First, court stenographers are responsible for transcribing court proceedings verbatim, managing evidence, and translating notes into legal documents. While the typical salary ranges from $60,000 to $120,000, high performers can earn between $200,000 and $300,000, particularly when working with complex legal and medical language. Despite concerns about AI, the need for human oversight of AI transcripts ensures the role's long-term stability. Second, dental hygienists, who clean teeth and screen for oral diseases, are another underestimated profession. With a median salary of $94,260, they can earn up to $100,000 in states like California. The job offers a favorable work-life balance, predictable hours, and requires only a two-year degree, making it largely resistant to automation. Finally, information security analysts act as the digital sheriffs of the internet, monitoring threats and securing systems. They command an average salary of $129,208, with senior engineers earning over $150,000. The field is highly accessible, with certifications often outweighing the need for a four-year degree, and the work is difficult to automate.
