Luminance & LexisNexis link legal AI tools for contracts
Summary
Luminance and LexisNexis have formed a strategic alliance to combine their legal AI technologies, specifically linking LexisNexis’s research tools with Luminance’s contract workflow platform. This integration targets in-house legal teams already utilizing both services, providing access to LexisNexis Protégé within Luminance and a pathway to Lexis+ with Protégé for more advanced legal work. Lawyers can now ask legal questions directly within Luminance and receive answers based on LexisNexis’s extensive content, including case law and statutes, without switching applications.
The collaboration reflects a growing trend among software providers to merge generative AI with large, proprietary datasets, focusing on access to verifiable legal sources. Luminance’s system is trained on over 220 million legal documents, while LexisNexis’s Lexis+ with Protégé draws on a repository of 200 billion legal documents, updated daily. This integration aims to streamline enterprise contract work by allowing lawyers to easily compare proposed wording with both internal precedents and external legal authorities.
Both companies emphasize the importance of data quality and provenance in legal AI, with Luminance CEO Eleanor Lightbody stating that “AI is only as good as the data behind it.” The partnership allows for a split workflow – routine contract tasks within Luminance and deeper legal research or drafting within Lexis+, ultimately helping in-house lawyers make more informed and verifiable contract decisions.
