AI in Judiciary: CJI Stresses the Importance of Human Judgement
Summary
Chief Justice of India, Justice Surya Kant, highlighted the importance of integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) into the judicial system while safeguarding the core function of human judgement. Speaking at a seminar on “Artificial Intelligence-Prevention and Resolution of Disputes,” he stated that AI should be used to handle large volumes of data, identify patterns, and reduce delays, but should not replace the human element in delivering verdicts. He cautioned against allowing AI to dominate decision-making, stressing the need for transparency and accountability. Karnataka High Court Chief Justice Vibhu Bakhru echoed these concerns, questioning whether AI would remain an aid or become a substitute for judges. However, the potential benefits of AI were also discussed, including predictive analysis of disputes, improved efficiency, and faster, more cost-effective dispute resolution. Prashant Kumar, President of the Bar Association of India, noted that AI-powered translation of court judgments is improving accessibility for people in rural areas. Ultimately, the consensus was that AI should function as a tool guided by human intellect, ensuring judicial independence, transparency, and legality remain paramount.
