Legal tech firm sues US over order limiting foreign access to top-tier Anthropic models

Reuters
Legion LegalTech Corp is suing the U.S. government after a directive forced Anthropic to restrict access to its advanced AI models.

Summary

Legion LegalTech Corp has filed a lawsuit in a Washington, D.C., federal court challenging a U.S. Commerce Department directive. The order requires Anthropic to disable its most advanced AI models, Fable 5 and Mythos 5, for all "foreign nationals." To ensure compliance, Anthropic immediately suspended access for all customers worldwide.

Legion, a San Jose-based company that develops drafting and case-management tools for attorneys, claims the restriction has caused immediate and existential harm. The company's software platform relies on Anthropic's tools, and the sudden deactivation has cut off access for its Canada-based development team, disrupting its business operations. Legion argues that the competitive advantage lost during such a suspension cannot be recovered.

This legal action occurs amidst ongoing tensions between Anthropic and the Trump administration. Anthropic is already involved in separate litigation after the government attempted to place the firm on a supply-chain blacklist due to its refusal to permit the military use of its models for domestic surveillance or autonomous weapons.
