Harvey AI Launches Global Legal Benchmark for UK, Australia, Spain

Harvey AI has released BigLaw Bench: Global, significantly expanding its legal AI benchmark to include the UK, Australia, and Spain. This update more than doubles the size of the original dataset and aims to quantify the performance gap of foundation models when applied to jurisdiction-specific legal tasks. The benchmark focuses on six key workflows – drafting, document analysis, comparison, research, multi-document analysis, and extraction – designed in collaboration with local legal practitioners.

The expansion is timely, as foundation models are achieving around 90% accuracy on core legal tasks, but performance declines when dealing with localized legal issues. Harvey’s research highlights the need to understand and address this localization gap. The benchmark includes specific scenarios, such as advising on FCA enforcement risks in the UK and analyzing CNMC antitrust exposure in Spain, providing a practical assessment of AI capabilities.

This benchmark is crucial for law firms operating internationally, offering a standardized way to evaluate AI vendors and ensure consistent quality across different jurisdictions. Harvey plans to extend its preference-based evaluation system, BLB: Arena, to these international markets and continue expanding the benchmark based on customer feedback, providing a valuable tool for legal tech buyers.
