The Black Business Ventures Association (BBVA) Innovation Expo in Edmonton offered a “Dragon’s Den” style experience for early-stage Black founders. The event, held at Edmonton Unlimited, aimed to celebrate and amplify Black entrepreneurship, innovation, and business leadership by providing a platform for founders to present their businesses and ideas. Ruth Orekogbe, co-founder of LiberatedAI, highlighted the importance of the event for fostering a sense of community and expanding possibilities for Black innovators in Alberta, noting she was surprised by the size of the Edmonton Black tech community. Six businesses – Zagga Rewards, Disclosezy, CidiPay, Lo-cal, RelayPro, and ClassGate – pitched their companies in five- to ten-minute presentations, primarily seeking partnerships, mentorship, and visibility rather than immediate funding. The event underscored the collective impact of Black entrepreneurs and the need for increased representation, particularly of female founders, in the tech space.
