FAA Ordered to Pay More Than $120,000 for Attorney Fees and Expenses Following Return of Air Carrier Certificate (Aircraft Maintenance Technology)
WASHINGTON, Sep. 2 /PRNewswire/ — In an unprecedented decision served on August 27, 2009, the Honorable William A. Pope, II, NTSB Administrative Law Judge (ALJ), Ordered the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to pay a Florida-based air ambulance operator $120,169.35 for attorney fees and expenses pursuant to the Equal Access to Justice Act (”EAJA”) 49 C.F.R., section 826.1 et. seq. First Women Elected to Simpson Thacher’s Executive Committee
Women partners at Simpson Thacher & Bartlett are celebrating the election of two women to the firm’s executive committee. Sarah Cogan and Laura Palma are the first women to join the 12-member committee in the firm’s 125 years of existence, the Am Law Daily reports. “It was a gaping hole not to have women on the top management committee,” Cogan told the publication. Women partners at the firm celebrated with “a spontaneous after-work party” at Charlie Palmer’s Metrazur restaurant in Grand Central Terminal, the story says. (More)

Pfizer Whistleblower’s $51.5M Payday Could Spark More Qui Tam Suits
Five whistleblowers will share $102 million as part of a record-breaking $2.3 billion settlement by Pfizer Inc. of a federal criminal probe and civil qui tam litigation over the company’s drug-marketing practices. Among those expecting a hefty payday under the False Claims Act is a former Texas sales representative for the company, John Kopchinski of San Antonio. His s expected to get $51.5 million, reports Reuters. It will come in handy: Fired by Pfizer in 2003, the Gulf War veteran already had a baby son and his wife was pregnant with twins. Sonnenschein Announces Layoffs of Up to 36 Lawyers
Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal has announced a round of layoffs that will affect up to 36 lawyers. In a written statement provided to the Kansas City Business Journal, the firm says that up to 24 associates could be affected. The Chicago-based international firm doesn’t break down the layoffs by office. The statement says the layoffs were needed to accord its legal staffing to the workload in some of Sonnenschein’s practice areas, according to the business publication, and describes the move as a prudent business decision will adversely affect “some very good people.” It goes on to say that Sonnenschein is… (More)
