A South Carolina lawyer won’t be allowed to practice law during an investigation of allegations that he punched and bit a state trooper in Utah. Charleston lawyer Michael DuPree was placed on interim suspension last month due to his arrest in Park City, Utah, the Post and Courier reports. Citing “a period of extraordinary difficulties in the last few days,” Dewey & LeBoeuf has warned all United States personnel in an internal memo “it is possible that adverse developments could ultimately result in the closure of the firm, which would result in the termination of your employment.” The notice doesn’t provide a specific date when employment might cease. US Supreme Court Nixes Torture Suit Against Palestinian Authority and PLO
The U.S. Supreme Court has unanimously ruled that a 1991 federal law authorizing foreign torture suits may not be used to sue organizations. A veteran of Supreme Court oral arguments says Solicitor General Donald Verrilli shouldn’t be criticized for his Supreme Court performance last week. Longtime 9th Circuit Judge Robert Beezer Dies; Court Sees Six Deaths in About One Year
Senior Judge Robert Beezer of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has died at the age of 83. The cause of death was lung cancer, report the Los Angeles Times and Courthouse News Service. Beezer is the sixth 9th Circuit judge to die in about a year’s time, “dealing yet another blow to the overwhelmed bench,” the Los Angeles Times says. Beezer became a federal judge in 1984.
